The Story of Our Flag

The first commissioned flag of The Commonwealth of Massachusetts was designed in 1908. Before then, many flags were used in various scenarios for various reasons. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts's first flag had a front and back design. The current flag was on the front, and on the back was a pine tree inside a blue shield. The shield represents the Blue Hills of Canton and Milton. The tree in the center represents a Pine Tree found throughout Massachusetts.

Our Story

Originally started as a passionate school project,  driven by a deep love for flags and a commitment to historical integrity. Amid the current controversies surrounding Massachusetts' state flag, we advocate for the return of the original design, which many believe better represents the state's heritage and values. Beyond historical significance, we also believe the current flag is plain and unoriginal, sharing the same format as many other state flags. Our mission is to educate the public about the original flag's significance and inspire a movement toward reinstating this distinct and meaningful symbol of Massachusetts' proud history. Through community engagement and advocacy, we aim to honor our state's past while addressing contemporary concerns and aesthetic values.

Our Founder

Matthew Haigh

Matt Haigh is the founder of the Massachusetts Flag Project, a student-led initiative dedicated to reimagining the state flag to represent all residents of the Commonwealth. Born and raised in Fitchburg, Matt has always been passionate about design, history, and civic engagement. What began as a high school project quickly evolved into a statewide movement, with Matt meeting legislators, city officials, and community leaders to advocate for a new and unifying flag.

Beyond the flag project, Matt is a student at Boston College. He is also the author of the bestselling Sam the Squirrel children’s book series, which helps teach kids about finance through storytelling. Through his work, Matt continues to combine creativity, leadership, and public service to drive meaningful change in his community and beyond.

Now that the goal of Old Mass Flag has been accomplished, Matt is turning his focus toward entrepreneurship, working to develop new ideas and ventures that make a positive impact on communities, both locally and beyond.

[Representative] Kushmerek expressed that he found Haigh “to be an impressive young man who does not shy away from tough conversations or the work necessary to seek change.”

In the Commonwealth

Government

We've worked with multiple city governments and are currently attempting to work with more state legislators to make progress on a larger scale. Over 75 cities have voted in solidarity with us. If you'd like to reach out to your local officials, we'd be happy to help.

Businesses

Businesses are the backbone of our state, and we love to support local businesses. You may see some businesses flying our flag or selling merchandise. If you run a business and would like to join our web of partners and a flag to fly outside your business, please email us, and we'd be happy to work with you.

Community

We pride ourselves on our community and the impact that a new flag could have. We love it when homeowners fly the flag outside on their porch, use a stick flag in their garden, and show their Bay State pride.
